ANCHORAGE, Alaska – The Alaska Nanooks men's basketball opened Great Northwest Athletic Conference play on a low note on Tuesday night, as the Nooks fell to in-state rival Alaska Anchorage 65-39 at the Alaska Airlines Center. The loss drops Alaska's overall record to 2-5 and 0-1 in conference play, while the Seawolves improve to 5-4 overall and 1-0 in GNAC contests.
"Tonight was really a struggle for us offensively but the biggest disappointment was the 21 turnovers," head coach
Mick Durham said on Tuesday. "Taking care of the basketball has just been an issue for us lately. We couldn't make anything tonight, from jumpers to layups to free throws. The positive we will be taking from tonight was we won the board battle and only held them to 65 points."
The Nooks held an early 3-2 lead in the first half before the Seawolves were able to pull away and head on a 14-0 run. From that moment forward, the Nanooks were not able to catch their opponent, entering halftime by trailing 29-13. The Nanooks doubled their offensive output in the second half, producing 26 points but the Seawolves kept the pedal down, continuing to outscore the Nanooks by 10 points in the second half alone.
As a team, Alaska shot only 15-for-50 from the floor for a 30.0 field goal percentage, but were still able to compete from behind the arc, making seven three-point shots to Anchorage's eight on the night. From the free throw line, the Nanooks went 2-for-6 (33 percent), while UAA shot 11-for-18 (61 percent).
For the second-straight game, turnovers plagued the Nanooks as they registered 21 to UAA's 12. The Nanooks remained solid around the net, outrebounding their rival 33-28, which included 21 defensive and 12 offensive boards.
The Nanooks were led by junior forward Alex Baham who shot 3-for-4 from the floor, all of them three-point shots, and 1-for-2 from the free throw line to tally 10 points on the night. Baham was only one of two players from either team to score double-digit figures and also tallied four assists in 30 minutes on the floor.
Junior forward Joe Lendway shot 4-for-11 from the field to register eight points against the Seawolves and led Alaska's rebounding efforts with nine on the night. Junior guard Davis Kimble paced his teammates in assists, dishing four against UAA.
The Seawolves were led individually by senior forward and NCAA Division I transfer Jacob Lampkin, who tallied a game-best 22 points and 10 rebounds for the night's only double-double. As a team, UAA shot 51 percent from the floor (23-for-45), 36 percent from behind the arc (8-for-22) and 61 percent from behind the free throw line (11-for-18).
The Alaska Nanooks men's basketball team will look to bounce back on Saturday, Dec. 2, as they host the undefeated Montana State Billings Yellowjackets in their first conference contest at home at the Alaska Airlines Court at 7:30pm AKST. Prior to tip-off against MSUB, the Alaska Nanooks women's basketball team will be taking on the Central Washington University Wildcats at home at 5:15pm AKST.
