FAIRBANKS, Alaska – The Alaska Nanooks hockey team suffered a sweep at home to the Michigan Tech Huskies on Saturday night, as the Nooks fell 5-1 in a Western Collegiate Hockey Association contest at the Carlson Center. The Nooks fall to 4-10-2 on the season and 2-7-1-1 in WCHA play, while the Huskies improve to 7-6-4 overall and 5-5-4-1 in league contests.
Michigan Tech went up 2-0 in the first period with even-strength goals from Brent Baltus (4:47) and Thomas Berettta (14:10). Baltus' fourth goal of the season was assisted by Alex Smith and Dylan Steman, while Beretta's tally was dished by Dylan Steman and Dane Birks.
The second period saw three unanswered even-strength goals from the Huskies, with Jake Jackson registering back-to-back goals at the 1:49 mark and the 4:50 mark. Jackson's first goal of the period was assisted by Baltus, for his second point of the night, and Mitch Reinke, while his second goal came courtesy of Smith for his second assist of the evening.
The second period concluded with an even-strength goal from Seamus Donohue, who tallied his first collegiate goal at the 16:33 mark with Gavin Gould earning the lone assist.
The Nanooks lone goal on the night came from redshirt-senior defenseman
Justin Woods, who netted an extra-attacker goal at the 12:50 mark of the third period. Woods' seventh goal of the season was assisted by junior defenseman
Nikolas Koberstein and junior forward
Chad Staley.
Alaska sophomore goaltender
Anton Martinsson and
Niko DellaMaggiore split time in net on Saturday night, as Martinsson collected 15 saves while DellaMaggiore tallied 14 against the Huskies. On the other end of the ice, Tech goaltender Packy Munson recorded 34 saves.
The Alaska Nanooks hockey team travels to Sault Ste. Marie, Michigan next weekend for a two game WCHA series against the Lake Superior State Lakers on Friday, Dec. 1 and Saturday, Dec. 2. Puck-drop for both games is slated for 3:07pm AKST.
