FAIRBANKS, Alaska – Despite making two buzzer-beater three-pointers to force two overtimes, the Alaska Nanooks men's basketball team fell 82-81 to the Holy Names Hawks in nonconference action at the Alaska Airlines Court on Monday night. The double-overtime loss drops Alaska's overall record to 1-2, while Holy Names improves to 2-3 on the year.
"It would've been a great to pull out a win tonight," head coach
Mick Durham said on Monday. "We entered each overtime carrying the momentum but we just couldn't sustain it throughout, I felt like we were always trying to come from behind. It's a great game for us to learn from this early in the season with a double-overtime, a lot of minutes for the guys. Holy Names is a tough team to play against, I just felt like we didn't really have much flow throughout the game. We'll learn from it and like I said, we're still a work in progress."
In a game that saw 15 tie scores, nine lead changes and six points marking the largest point margin throughout the night, both teams battled back-and-forth throughout 50 minutes of play. After trailing 61-64 with 14 seconds remaining in the second half, Alaska junior guard Alex Baham dropped a good three-point shot at the eight second mark to force overtime at his home court.
The Nanooks were trailing by five points with 24 seconds remaining in the first overtime before redshirt-freshman guard Zach Hatch made a three-point shot to pull Alaska to within two points at 70-72. Holy Names' Kyvonte Davis made one of his two free throws with seven seconds remaining before junior guard Davis Kimble stormed down the court and dropped a three-point shot to tie the game 73-73 and force double-overtime. Down 82-81 in the second overtime, a Nanook turnover with 14 seconds remaining in the allowed the Hawks to hold off the Nanooks' third attempt at comeback.
