BURNABY, BC – Despite a 12-kill night from rookie middle blocker Kim Wong, the Alaska Nanooks volleyball team wasn't able to pull off a comeback against the Simon Fraser Clan at the West Gym on Friday night. The first of a two-game Great Northwest Athletic Conference road trip for the Nooks, Alaska fell to the Clan in four sets (17-25, 25-22, 9-25, 19-25), extending Simon Fraser's winning-streak to 10 games.
The Nanooks overall record moves to 2-8 (1-2 GNAC), while the Clan improve to 10-1 overall (3-0 GNAC).
Wong handily led the Nanooks offense, posting 12 kills and only three errors for a .333 hitting percentage. Simon Fraser battled back, posting two service aces and eventually going on a four-point run to go from 13-16 to 13-19 in favor of the Clan. Simon Fraser captured the first set 17-25.
However, the Nanooks got gritty in the second set when Wong posted another kill to give Alaska the lead. Alaska found momentum and continued on a three-point run to make it 6-3 before Oliver-Otero led the charge to extend the lead to 15-11 later on. Simon Fraser tried to close the gap, coming as close as 18-15 but the Nooks dug deep and took the second set 25-22.
Despite going on the board first in the third set, Simon Fraser handily took control of the third set, going on a seven-point run to make it 2-10 in a hurry. Alaska was unable to close the gap on the Clan's lead, eventually falling 9-25.
After trailing 0-1 in the fourth set, Alaska went on a five-point run to make it 5-1 quickly. SFU came back and tied the set at 9-9 before taking back the lead at 9-10. A back-and-forth battle ensued, with a tie game coming at the 15, 16 and 17 mark before an ace by Podowicz finally gave the Nanooks a two- point lead. The Clan fought back, going on a seven-point run from the 19-19 mark to take the fourth set 19-25.
It will be a quick turnaround for the Nanooks, as they take on Western Washington tomorrow (Sept. 24) in another GNAC match-up at 6pm AKT at the Whatcom Pavilion in Bellingham, Washington.
