Binghamton Senators Release (Greenham) | Utica Comets Release (Kunyk)
FAIRBANKS – On Monday, it was announced that former Alaska hockey players Scott Greenham ('12) and Cody Kunyk ('14) have each signed contracts to play in the American Hockey League (AHL) for the 2016-17 season. Greenham will continue playing for the Binghamton Senators, while Kunyk will skate for the Utica Comets; both teams are based out of New York State.
Greenham, a goaltender for the Nanooks from 2008-2012, inked a one-year extension contract with the Senators after appearing in six games for Binghamton last season. The Addison, Ontario native averaged 2.19 goals-against and a .928 save percentage during the B-Sens' 2015-16 campaign. The Binghamton Senators are the AHL affiliate for the Ottawa Senators of the National Hockey League (NHL) and the Evansville Icemen of the East Coast Hockey League (ECHL).
A four-year goaltender for the Nooks, Greenham appeared in 115 games for Alaska, which included 11 shutouts over the course of his career. Greenham went 48-47-19 during his time with the Nanooks, posting a career save percentage of .916. A Central Collegiate Hockey Association (CCHA) Second All-Star team selection in 2011 and a Lowes Senior CLASS All-American (Second Team) in 2012, Greenham went on to sign with Bakersfield Condors of the AHL in spring of 2012 before finally settling down with Binghamton in spring of 2013.
Kunyk, the Western Collegiate Hockey Association's (WCHA) 2013-14 Player of the Year, returns to the AHL after spending a year with the Gentofte Stars of the Meta Ligaen in Denmark during the 2015-16 season. After posting 13 goals and 16 assists for 29 points in 27 games for the Stars, Kunyk has signed a one-year contract with the Utica Comets, the AHL affiliate of the Vancouver Canucks (NHL) and the Alaska Aces (ECHL).
During his four-year career with the Nanooks, Kunyk appeared in 148 games, tallying 60 goals and 73 assists for 133 points. The Sherwood Park, Alberta native was named to the CCHA Second All-Star team in 2012 before being honored as a CCM Second Team All-American following his final season (2013-14).
After his departure from the Nanooks, Kunyk signed with the Tampa Bay Lightning of the NHL and made his pro debut on Apr. 13, 2014, logging 10:12 minutes of ice time. Kunyk then spent the following season (2014-15) with the Syracuse Crunch (AHL) before heading to Denmark in fall of 2015.
