GNAC Release
PORTLAND, Ore. – On Wednesday, the Great Northwest Athletic Conference announced its 2016 Volleyball Academic All-Conference team, with three Nanooks selected to the 47-member team. Redshirt-senior libero Meagan Olsen makes the team for her third-straight year, while fellow senior Jordan Ferland and redshirt-junior Maddie Davis make their first appearance on the conference list.
Alaska's three honorees tie the amount of selections for the Nanooks from last season, when Olsen and former players Sam Harthun and Samantha Hesterman were selected to the 2015 Volleyball All-Academic team. Throughout the 47 selections, Olsen is only one of five student-athletes to be a three-time selection. Saint Martin's led all GNAC teams with eight selections this season.
Head Coach Brian Scott was pleased to see that three of his student-athletes were named to the GNAC All-Academic team and stressed the importance of academic success.
"It's extremely validating to have athletes who are just as dedicated in the classroom as they are on the court. These three young women are terrific role models of what it means to be a student-athlete here in Fairbanks. Their dedication and work ethic on and off the court will take them far in life."
To be eligible for selection to the GNAC Volleyball All-Academic team, a student-athlete must be a sophomore standing or higher, have competed at the nominating institution for at least one year and have a cumulative 3.20 grade point average or higher.
The Alaska Nanooks volleyball team is on the road this week, taking on Western Oregon on Thursday (Nov. 3) before facing Concordia on Saturday (Nov. 5). This weekend's conference matches are scheduled for 6pm AKT.
