Late Comeback Gives @NanooksMBB 71-68 Win Over BYU-Hawaii

ANCHORAGE, Alaska – Zach Peterson scored 15 points on 7-of-9 shooting and Alaska Fairbanks held BYU-Hawaii without a field goal for the final nine minutes to complete a 71-68 comeback victory Saturday in the Seawolf Jamboree at the Alaska Airlines Center.

The Nanooks (2-3) also got 14 points and seven rebounds from forward Bengaly Kaba and 12 points, six assists and five steals from guard Brandon Davis as they rallied from a 52-39 deficit with 12 minutes remaining.

"Tonight was a gritty win for us and I'm really proud of the guys for continuing to battle for the entire game, despite playing from behind most of the game," head coach Mick Durham said on Saturday afternoon. "Nahjee made four big free throws to seal the victory. We have a long road ahead of us but tonight's win was great for our guys and also a great learning experience."

The Seasiders (0-3), who used only six players, got a game-high 35 points from Tanner Nelson, plus 13 points and 17 rebounds from forward Denhym Brooke. The Pacific West Conference team had a chance to tie on a length-of-the-court play with 4.8 seconds remaining, but Bailey Kikuchi's three-point try went off the glass and hit the rim before bouncing out at the buzzer.

Nahjee Matlock scored 13 points for UAF, including the go-ahead basket to make it 67-65 with 58 seconds left.

As a team, the Nooks collected 40 rebounds, 15 assists and 10 steals, while shooting 38% (27-of-71) from the field, 21.7% from behind the arc (5-of-23) and 75% (12-of-16) from the free throw line. The Nooks received 16 points off of turnovers, 11 from second chance points and 13 points from the bench.

Following the Alaska Anchorage vs. Cal State LA game at the Seawolf Jamboree, Davis was selected to the All-Tournament Team. It marks the second-straight weekend Davis was selected for a tournament/crossover honor.

The Alaska Nanooks men's basketball team will be back in action on less than 72 hours, as they take on the Cal State LA Golden Eagles once again on Monday, Nov. 21 at the Alaska Airlines Court  at 7pm AKST.
