FAIRBANKS, Alaska – The No. 10th-ranked Alaska Nanooks coed rifle team defeated the No. 4 Kentucky Wildcats on Saturday afternoon, claiming their third straight victory 4,671 – 4,667 at the E.F. Horton Rifle Range. Redshirt-junior Sagen Maddalena was the top-individual shooter of the day, marking her third-straight match being at the top.
"Today was a good match, we always have fun shooting with Kentucky," head coach Layne Lewis said following Saturday's win. "Our air rifle was strong today and we plan to carry that strength and momentum into our match tomorrow against NC State."
Maddalena shot an aggregate score of 1,176, posting a smallbore score of 582 and an air rifle mark of 594. Maddalena was a full eight points ahead of the second overall shooter, Kentucky's Hanna Carr, who recorded an aggregate score of 1,168. Maddalena was the first-place shooter in smallbore and second-place shooter in air rifle.
Sophomore JT Schnering placed third on the day with an aggregate posting of 1,167, his highest individual overall placing of the season. Schnering placed fifth in smallbore with a score of 577 before placing sixth in air rifle with a 590.
Redshirt-senior co-captain Soren Butler placed sixth overall individually on the day, scoring a 572 in smallbore and a 591 in air rifle to tally an aggregate score of 1,163. Junior Luke Johnson also scored a 1,163 on Saturday afternoon, tying Butler for sixth place. Johnson registered a 580 in smallbore to tie for second place, before shooting a 583 in air rifle.
Additionally, sophomore Nathan Taylor shot a personal-best in air rifle with a 591, while newcomer Liam Eberhart recorded a match-best 585 in air rifle. Freshman Grace Nelson also shot a season-best in air rifle with a 580.
The Alaska Nanooks coed rifle team takes on NC State for their final home match of the season tomorrow, Nov. 20 starting at 9am AKST.
