HUNTSVILLE, Ala. –The Alaska Nanooks hockey team overcame a three-goal deficit to tie the Alabama Huntsville Chargers 3-3 within the 65 minutes of regulation but it was the double-overtime goal by junior forward Tayler Munson who gave the Nanooks the extra Western Collegiate Hockey Association point on Friday night at the Von Braun Center in Huntsville. The Nooks move to an overall record of 3-7-1 and 2-4-1-1 in conference play, while the Chargers fall to 4-7-2 overall, 4-3-2-0 WCHA.
"We were fortune to get two points tonight, based on the start we had. UAH came out hard and we didn't handle it well," head coach Dallas Ferguson said following Friday's game. "As the game went on, we started to skate the puck better, which in turn lead to us having more puck possession and time in the offensive zone."
At first, it looked as though the Nanooks were in for a long game, as the Chargers scored two unanswered goals in the first two-and-a-half minutes of the game. Alabama's Brandon Parker scored the Chargers' first goal of the night 55 seconds into the game, when teammate Matt Salhany kicked up UAH's lead 2-0 at the 2:24 mark of the first period.
After a troublesome first period, the Nooks looked to regroup at first intermission but the Chargers struck early once again, this time it was Jordan Larson with a power play goal less than two minutes into the second period (1:43) to give UAH a 3-0 lead.
Later on, it was senior forward Marcus Basara who finally put the Nanooks on the board at the 15:34 mark of the second period. Basara's unassisted goal was his fourth of the season and his first point of the night in what became a multi-point game for the Port Moody, British Columbia native.
Alaska carried that momentum going into the third period, as redshirt-junior defenseman Justin Woods scored his second power-play goal of the season only 35 seconds into the third to pull the Nanooks to within one goal. Woods' man-advantage goal was assisted by junior defenseman Zach Frye and Basara.
Eleven minutes later (11:47), the Nooks tied the game at three-apiece when sophomore forward John Mullally scored his first goal of the season. Mullally's second point of the 2016-17 season was assisted by rookie forwards Troy Van Tetering and Aaron Herdt, marking Herdt's first collegiate point.
"I thought the timing of our first couple of goals was important. Basara scoring with under five minutes in the second period and then Woods' third period power-play goal were big goals for our group," Ferguson added. "After that point, we got the game going at the pace we like and made a good offensive push for the remainder of it."
Mullally's tally was the last goal of regulation, as the Nanooks turned up the heat and pushed for a five-minute five-on-five overtime, in which neither team was able to seal the victory and three conference points.
Onto Alaska's first three-on-three five-minute overtime period where Munson was able to bury the puck after following up a rebound to give the Nanooks the two WCHA points, instead of one. With the new WCHA regulations put into effect this year, anything past the 65-minute mark is considered a tie in the eyes of the NCAA, which is why the Nanooks tied the Chargers instead of defeating them. According to the WCHA, both teams will receive one conference point if they are both tied after 65-minutes, but a team will receive two conference points if they win in the three-on-three overtime period or a shootout.
Alaska outshot their opponent for the first time since their 4-1 win over Alaska-Anchorage on Oct. 8, edging the Chargers out 29-23, with 13 shots coming in the third period. Alaska was backstopped by sophomore goaltender Jesse Jenks, who made 20 saves on the night, including 11 in the first period alone. On the other end of the ice, UAH's Jordan Uhelski registered 26 saves total, 11 in the third period.
"At the 3-0 mark, Jesse made some big saves when we needed him to," Ferguson concluded. "That's the goaltending we need to get points in tight games like this. His play at that point really sparked our team."
The Alaska Nanooks take on the Alabama-Huntsville Chargers tomorrow, Nov. 12 in another conference tilt at 4:07pm AKST at the Von Braun Center. The game will be televised on Fox 7 Fairbanks once again, with the game on tape-delay and slated for a 7pm AKST start.
