Sault Ste. Marie, Mich. – Two goals from senior forward Marcus Basara and a season-best 38 save performance from sophomore goaltender Jesse Jenks helped lift the Alaska Nanooks hockey team to a 4-3 overtime victory against the Lake Superior State University Lakers in a Western Collegiate Hockey Association contest at the Taffy Abel Arena on Saturday evening.
The Nanooks handed Lake Superior State their first loss of the season with the overtime win, as the Nooks' record improves to 3-5-0 overall, 2-2-0 in WCHA play while the Lakers drop to 5-1-0 overall, 3-1-0 WCHA.
Alaska was outshot by their opponent 41-26 with Jenks recording 38 saves on the night, including 17 in the first period alone. Jenks' performance on Saturday night is only one save shy of his single-game personal-best of 39, which he made on Nov. 21, 2015 at Ferris State. On the other end of the ice, LSSU's Nick Kossoff made 22 saves with 12 coming in the third period.
A handful of Nanooks had multi-point nights, including Basara (2 goals), freshman forward Ross Heidt (1 goal, 1 assist), freshman forward Troy Van Tetering (2 assists) and junior forward Chad Staley (2 assists).
Basara scored the first goal of the game at the 3:51 mark of the first period, lighting the lamp to give the Nooks a 1-0 lead with assists to Heidt and Van Tetering. Hiedt moved the puck up-ice to Van Tetering in the neutral zone, which sent Basara and Van Tetering on an odd-man rush entering the Lakers defensive zone. Van Tetering dished the puck to Basara across the slot for a quick shot past Kossoff's glove.
Heidt scored his first collegiate power play goal at the 11:57 mark of the first period, giving the Nooks a 2-0 lead over the Lakers. As the Nanooks entered the zone on the power play, a broken pass from Staley to freshman forward Tyler Cline landed on Heidt's stick while he was occupying the slot. Heidt turned and shot the puck before Kossoff was ready for the shot to give Heidt his second goal of the season.
At the 15:57 mark of the first period, LSSU's Gage Torrel scored on a power play to pull Lake Superior to within one goal. Torrel was alone in front of Jenks and buried a rebound after Jenks made the initial save off of a shot from the point. Thirty-eight seconds into the second period, Lake Superior tied the game when Mitch Hults walked off the wall entering the Nanooks defensive zone to shot a wrister past Jenks high-glove.
Fast-forward to the third period when junior defenseman Zach Frye buried one on the power play to give the Nooks a 3-2 lead at the 13:19 mark. Staley made a nice pass across the slot to Frye, was who creeping in backdoor before Frye's shot went past Kossoff.
Two minutes later (15:08), Lake Superior tied the game at three apiece when Mitch Hults scored his second goal of the game off of an odd-man rush entering the Nanooks defensive zone.
Alaska started the overtime period on the penalty kill, which the Nooks quickly killed off. Once both teams were at even-strength, senior forward Brandon Morley gave a pass from the corner to Van Tetering who was covered in front of Kossoff. The puck was lying in the crease while Van Tetering was battling his defender before Basara swooped in weak-side to slide the puck past Kossoff for the game-winner.
The win breaks Alaska's 0-2 mark when they enter overtime, now moving to 1-2. The Nooks earn three WCHA points from the win and currently sits in sixth place in the WCHA standings with six points.
The Alaska Nanooks hockey team returns to the Carlson Center next weekend (Nov. 4-5) for a two-game WCHA series against the No. 19th-ranked Bemidji State Beavers. Puck-drop is slated for 7:07 pm AKT on both nights.
