ANCHORAGE, Alaska – Despite late comebacks in both the first and third set, the Alaska Nanooks volleyball team fell victim to the No. 11th-ranked Alaska Anchorage Seawolves on Tuesday night, dropping the Great Northwest Athletic Conference match in three sets. The Nooks went 19-25, 11-25 and 21-25 against the Seawolves to move to 2-18 overall (1-12 GNAC), while Anchorage improves to 22-2 overall (12-1 GNAC).
As a team, the Nooks collected 27 kills on the night to combine for a .097 hitting percentage. Redshirt-junior outside hitter
Maddie Davis and sophomore outside hitter
Amberly Jeane posted seven kills each to lead the Nanooks' offense, with Jeane registering the team's best hitting percentage with a .211. The duo didn't just stop there, Jeane recorded four digs and one block assist for 7.5 points, while Davis also chipped in one service ace, two digs and one block assist for a team-high 8.5 points.
Junior setter
Rachel Nichols recorded a team-high 22 assists, while also totaling one kill and five digs. Junior middle blocker
Riley Podowicz combined for 5.5 points on the night, from three kills, one assist, one service ace and team-high three block-assists.
Alaska's best set came in the third when the Nooks posted ten kills and three errors from 30 total attacks, combining for a .233 hitting percentage. Alaska posted at least 10 sideouts in each of the three sets on the night, posting a 41% sideout percentage in the first and third set. Alaska also out-blocked their in-state rival 4-3.
The Seawolves were led by outside hitter Leah Swiss, who posted a game-high 13 kills, two service aces and eight digs for a game-high 15.0 points. Setter Morgan Hooe recorded 35 assists and five kills, while libero Kyla Militante-Amper and defensive specialist Chrisalyn Johnson chipped in 14 digs each.
The Nooks fought hard against the No. 11th-ranked team in NCAA DII, posting 14 tie scores and 10 lead changes total throughout the three sets, which included 11 tie scores and eight lead changes in the first set alone.
The Alaska Nanooks return to the Alaska Airlines Court at the Patty Center this upcoming Saturday, Oct. 29 to host the Montana State Billings Yellowjackets in another GNAC match. Saturday's game is also costume night, where fans who dress in a Halloween costume receive free admission into the game. First serve is slated for 7:00pm AKT.
