Special Teams Push Lakers Past @NanooksHockey

FAIRBANKS, Alaska – The Alaska Nanooks hockey team falls to 2-7-2 in Western Collegiate Hockey Association play, after the Lake Superior State Lakers defeated the Nanooks 4-2 at the Carlson Center on Friday evening. The Nanooks drop to 4-9-2 record overall, while the Lakers improve to 5-9-3 overall and 3-3-3 in the WCHA.

Sophomore defenseman Justin Woods scored his second goal of the season, while freshman forward Chad Staley scored his second power play goal in back-to-back weekends. Junior goaltender Davis Jones made 21 saves on the night, while Lake Superior's sophomore goaltender Gordon Defiel made 26 saves, as the Nanooks outshot the Lakers 28-25 on the night.

The night seemed to be a special teams battle, as five of the six total goals were on the man-advantage or shorthanded. The Lakers capitalized on special teams going 3-4 on power play chances, while the Nanooks were only able to take advantage of one of five power play opportunities.

"It was a tough game for our special teams," Assistant Coach Corbin Schmidt said of the game. "Had there been zero penalties during that game, we would've won 1-0. Our special teams just didn't perform tonight. We have some work to do, we will watch the video tonight and come back at it tomorrow."

The Nanooks built momentum toward the second half of a tight first period by firing multiple shots on goal during a long shift for the Lakers until sophomore forward  Tayler Munson grabbed a Defiel rebound and passed it down to freshman forward Ryker Leer. Leer moved into the corner and kicked the puck up to the half-wall, where Woods was wide open. Woods made a quick wrist shot on goal that went right past Defiel with senior forward Nolan Huysmans screening in front.

The Lakers used two power play goals and a shorthanded goal in the second period to move up 3-1 over the Nanooks. Junior forward Alex Globke tied the Lakers  up to 1-1 at the 9:12 mark of the second period, as Globke tipped in a shot from the point. Six minutes later, freshman forward Anthony Nellis netted his second goal of the season on the power play to make it 2-1 Lakers. At the end of the second period, freshman forward Diego Cuglietta put in a tireless effort on the penalty kill, aggressively forechecking the Nanooks defense before firing a wrist shot past Jones to end the second period 3-1 Lake Superior State.

The Nanooks were able to make it 3-2 at the 5:01 mark of the third period when Munson moved the puck up the blue line where sophomore defenseman Zach Frye was open. Frye walked across the blue line to the center of the Laker's D-Zone before faking a slap-shot and passing it to Staley who was alone back door. Staley's second power play goal of the season, also counts as the Spokane, Washington native's third point of his collegiate career (two goals, one assist).

Unfortunately, the Nanooks weren't able to even up the score as the Lakers' junior forward Gus Correale made it 4-2 on the power play, with assists from Headrick and Globke.

The Alaska hockey team returns for game two of this weekend's WCHA series against the Lakers tomorrow  evening at the Carlson Center, with puck drop set for 7:07 p.m. AST. Tomorrow's game will also have free admission for any active duty or retired military and their dependents.
