PROVO, Utah -- The Alaska Nanooks men's basketball team outscored NCAA Division I BYU in the second half, but they could not get past the Cougars, as they fall, 77-64, to conclude a two-game, two-day exhibition road trip this weekend.
A trio of newcomers proved the spark for Alaska on the night, as transfers Travante Williams, Bangaly Kaba and Brandon Davis each had a double-digit scoring night. Williams led the Nanooks in scoring for the second-straight night, as his followed his 17-point outing at Nevada on Friday with a 13-point effort against a Cougars team that made the NCAA Division I Tournament last season. Kaba chipped in 12 points and added seven rebounds, while Davis came off the bench to score 11 points on 4-of-5 from the field.
The Nanooks shot 46.9% in the second half to outscore BYU, 39-38, in the second frame. Alaska hit six of their eight three-point field goals in the second half, as Davis was a perfect 3-of-3 from behind the arc.
BYU held a 47-38 advantage on the boards, but it was All-GNAC preseason selection Almir Hadzisehovic who grabbed the most caroms on the night, as he collected a game-high nine boards to go along with seven points. Alaska was very careful with the ball, as they committed just 10 turnovers on the night, while they handed out 14 assists, led by Joe Slocum's game-high five.
Chase Fischer led the Cougars in scoring on the night, as he turned in an 18-point performance, doing most of his damage at the free throw line where he was 7-of-8. Kyle Collingsworth added 14 points while Nick Emery and Jakob Hartsock each chipped in 11 points.
Alaska will conclude its exhibition schedule on Monday, as they'll host NAIA opponent Lincoln Christian at the Alaska Airlines Court at the Patty Center. Tip-off is set for 7 p.m.
