FAIRBANKS, Alaska – The Alaska Nanooks men's basketball team's four-game season-opening winning streak came to an end on Friday, as they suffered a 71-58 setback against Dixie State on the first day of the Montana State Billings Holiday Tournament.
Alaska (4-1) got a trio of double-digits scoring performances from Joe Slocum, Bangaly Kaba and Ashton Edwards, but it wouldn't be enough for the Nanooks to overcome a Red Storm (2-3) team that shot 47.2 percent from the floor.
Slocum led the team with 15 points, and hit a team-best four 3-point field goals in the loss. It is the fourth-straight double-digit scoring performance for the San Francisco native. Kaba and Edwards each collected 10 points in the loss. Kaba also tied senior Almir Hadzisehovic for the team lead in rebounds, as they each collected five caroms apiece.
Alaska shot a 33.3 percent in the lost, as they were 11-of-33 in each half. The Nanooks forced 22 Dixie State turnovers, as senior Trevante Williams picked up a game-best four steals. The Alaska defense limited the Red Storm to just a 29.2 percent performance from the field in the second half, after DSU connected on a blistering 62.1 percent in the opening half.
The Nanooks found themselves down by double-digits early in the first half, but were able to pull within nine points at the break, as they trailed 41-32. Alaska opened the second frame with a 16-6 run, capped off by an Edwards layup, to take a 48-47 lead with 13:37 remaining in the game. Dixie State knotted the game up at 50-all at the 9:14-mark after a pair of Brandon Simister free throws. The game would be tied once more at 52-52, before Dixie State closed out the game on a 19-6 run to capture the 13-point victory.
Alaska will be back in action tomorrow afternoon, as they conclude the Montana State Billings Holiday Tournament against Dominican University (Calif.). Tip off from Alterowitz Gymnasium is set for 1 p.m. AKST.
