BIG RAPIDS, Mich. – Four freshman on the Alaska Nanooks hockey team appeared on the scoresheet Saturday night, as the Nanooks tied Ferris State University 3-3 in overtime at the Ewigleben Arena in Big Rapids, Michigan. Alaska's tie with the Bulldogs, marks the Nanooks' second tie of the season, as they move to 4-6-2 overall and 2-4-2 in Western Collegiate Hockey Association play, while Ferris State improves to 5-5-4 overall (4-4-2 WCHA).
With two ties against Ferris State this weekend, the Nanooks collect two WCHA points moving them into seventh place in the standings with six points total.
Freshman goaltender Jesse Jenks holds on to his unbeaten streak, moving to 2-0-2 on the season after making another career-high 39 saves Saturday night. On the other end of the rink, Ferris State's freshman goaltender Darren Smith stopped 34 of Alaska's shots. The Bulldogs edged the Nanooks in shots, 42-37 in all three periods and overtime.
Freshman Jasen Fernsler put the Nanooks on the scoreboard first at the 5:48 mark of the first period, as the right-winger collected his first collegiate point in front of his family, who was in attendance. Sophomore forward Colton Sparrow came into the Ferris State zone wide on the wall, dragging the Bulldogs' defense with him into the corner. Sparrow fed the puck through the slot to Fernsler, who was alone in front of Smith and one-timed it upstairs on the freshman goaltender to make it 1-0. Fellow freshman John Mullally also collected his first collegiate point, when given the secondary assist on Fernsler's goal.
Ferris State's Kyle Schempp leveled the playing field 5:10 into the second period, tying the game 1-1. Schempp's goal was an even strength slapshot from the top of the circles, assists given to junior forward Gerald Mayhew and senior defenseman Brandon Anselmini.
The Bulldogs took a 2-1 lead over the Nanooks five minutes later, as junior forward Chad McDonald tallied his fifth goal of the year, putting the puck past Jenks at the 10:53 mark in the second period. McDonald and junior forward Jared VanWormer were coming into the Nanook zone on a 2-on-2 rush, when VanWormer pulled both Alaska defensemen over to him before threading the puck to McDonald, who beat Jenks blocker side. Senior defenseman Simon Denis was awarded the secondary assist on the goal.
The Nanooks answered back quickly, when junior forward Josh Erickson tied things back up to 2-2 less than a minute later. After a high-cycle in the Ferris State zone with senior forward Josh Atkinson, Erickson was alone inside the Bulldogs blueline and blasted a slapshot past Smith. Erickson's first goal of the season was assisted by Atkinson and freshman forward Ryker Leer.
Ferris State took back the lead to make it 3-2 at the 14:15 minute mark late in the third period, when the Bulldogs came down the ice on a 3-on-2 rush, when senior forward Matt Robertson tipped in a Zach Dorer shot, secondary assist given to Gerald Mayhew.
With less than five minutes left in the third period, Ferris' Mayhew took a five minute major for contact to the head. The Nanooks took advantage of the long power play and pulled Jenks with 65 seconds left in the third. The two-man advantage proved to be helpful for the Nanooks, as senior forward Nolan Huysmans picked up the puck in a net-front scramble and put it behind Smith with 40 seconds left in the game. Assists were given to senior captain Tyler Morley and senior forward Alec Hajdukovich, who finished the weekend with two points.
Both Ferris and Alaska had four shots on goal in overtime, but neither team was able to get the win.
The Alaska Nanooks return to Fairbanks for a two-game, WCHA series against Michigan Tech University Friday, Nov. 27 and Saturday, Nov. 28. Puck drop is set for both nights at 7:07pm AST.
