BURNABY, British Columbia – Senior Sam Harthun became the Great Northwest Athletic Conference's all-time leader in kills on Saturday night in a losing effort at Simon Fraser. The Clan knocked off the Alaska Nanooks volleyball team 3-0 (18-25, 15-25, 14-25), as the Nanooks wrap up the 2015 road portion of its schedule.
Harthun entered the match tied with Sarah Sommerman for the conference's all-time kills record and broke that tie with Sommerman with her first kill in the first set. The senior ended the match with nine kills, pushing her career total to 1,470 as she now stands alone atop the GNAC's all-time kills. The nine kills snaps the outside hitter eight-match kill streak.
"It couldn't happen to a better kid," said head coach Brian Scott after the match. "She has worked hard her entire career and she has earned the right to be this conference's all-time kills leader. She will always be remembered in this league, not only because of her arm, but also for what kind of person she is. She is always shaking hands with the table crew thanking them for their work after every match either road or home and people remember that. I could not be happier for her than I am tonight and I'm very lucky to have been a part of her career."
The Nanooks collected five blocks on the night, led by Kensey Mix's three assisted blocks. Alaska hit .130 on the night, as the Simon Fraser defense collected 54 digs to the Nanooks' 33.
"We weren't firing on all cylinders tonight and some of that was our own doing and the other was the defensive effort of SFU," said Scott, "They are a very good defensive team that can frustrate you when you're trying to put balls away and they did that to use tonight."
Alaska concludes the 2015 season next weekend, as they'll take on Western Oregon and Concordia next Thursday and Saturday. Both games are set for 7 p.m. at the Alaska Airlines Court.
