Box Score BOWLING GREEN, Ohio – No. 11 nationally ranked Bowling Green scored three times in the final period to sink the Alaska Nanooks, 3-0, on Friday night in Western Collegiate Hockey Association play. The loss ends Alaska's four game winning streak and its five game winning streak for Friday night games.
The Nanooks (12-9, 7-8 WCHA) dip back below .500 in the league while the surging Falcons (13-3-3, 9-1-1 WCHA) extend their conference unbeaten run to eight games.
Both teams struggled to get anything going offensively through the first two periods, with penalties and sloppy play preventing any flow from being developed. The Nanooks, who started the game brightly, mustered just three shots in the second period and trailed in that department, 15-10 at the end of 40 minutes.
Unfortunately, Bowling Green struck quickly in the third period, as Brent Tate took advantage of some awkward play behind the Alaska net, and, after taking a pass from Adam Berkle, he slotted it past Davis Jones to give BGSU the lead.
Despite a few power play opportunities throughout the game, and especially when trailing, the Nanooks were unable to overcome the Falcon penalty kill, who currently rank first in the nation. Following a power play, the puck bounced over a Nanook defender's stick causing a two-on-one which was completed by Matt Pohlkamp who doubled BGSU's lead.
Berkle completed the scoring with his second point on the night, as he followed up a rebound late in the third period giving the Falcons a 3-0 advantage.
Alaska did not create many chances throughout the game, and with only 18 shots overall, it was unable to figure out Chris Nell in net, who recorded his second shutout on the season.
Davis Jones made 31 saves in a losing effort, including 16 in the third period.
The Nanooks will look to avenge tonight's loss with a 3:07 p.m. AKST faceoff against the Falcons on Saturday. The game will be shown on a tape delay on FOX 7 immediately following the Carolina Panthers – Seattle Seahawks NFL Playoff Game.
