Box Score 2 FAIRBANKS – Junior outside hitter
Sam Harthun smashed a game-high 17 kills and was named to the Flint Hills Resources Alaska Nanook Classic All-Tournament Team, but it was not enough, as the Nanooks fell, 3-1, to St. Edward's University (Texas) on Saturay afternoon and to Tiffin University (Ohio), 3-0, in the nightcap.
After losing the first set, Alaska (0-4) battled for an intense, 28-26, victory in the second set, but dropped the last two sets 15 & 16.
St. Edward's (3-0) were led by Mary Koehler and Hannah Rauch who had 13 and 12 kills, respectively. Both were named to the All-Tournament Team while Rauch was named Tournament Most Valuable Player as she helped the Hilltoppers claim the championship trophy.
Rounding out the All-Tournament Team was SEU's Alyssa Stanton and Lauren Kelly as well as Tiffin University's (Ohio) Lu Phillips and Ally Kohlhase.
Freshman
Riley Podowicz recorded six kills on 13 total attacks, against SEU, for an impressive kill percentage of .462 and also had two aces. Defensively the Nanooks were led by
Tessa Butterfield who recorded a team-high 15 digs.
Against Tiffin, the Nanooks'
Brooke Mattice closed out a strong tournament with 10 kills on 27 attempts (.333 pct) while Harthun again led the Alaska attack with 12 kills and three service aces.
Alaska now travels to Colorado for the CSU-Pueblo/UCCS Volleyball Classic over the weekend. The first match is scheduled for Friday, September 12, against Adams State University (Colo.) at 11:00 a.m.
