Nanook Hockey Annual Blue-Gold Game Decided in Shootout

FAIRBANKS-For the second year in a row, the Blue/Gold hockey game was decided by a shootout.  Tallies from sophomore right wing Marcus Basara and junior defenseman Colton Parayko in the extra session, sealed a 2-1 win for Team Gold.  Junior right wing Alec Hajdukovich scored in the shootout for Team Blue.

The two squads battled to a 0-0 game until junior right wing Nolan Huysmans opened scoring at 19:43 of the second half, putting Team Blue up 1-0.  The teams played two halves under a 25-minute running clock.  Hajdukovich and senior defenseman Nolan Kaiser assisted on the tally.  Freshman forward Peter Krieger answered just less than three minutes later, when he deposited the rebound of a Parayko slap shot at 22:50 of the second.  Parayko appeared to score the game-winner with 26 seconds remaining, but the goal was waved off due to goaltender interference.

Senior goaltender Sean Cahill made 15 saves for Team Gold, while sophomore Davis Jones stopped 10 shots for Team Blue.  Junior John Keeney made six saves while splitting time in net between both teams.

Nanook head hockey coach Dallas Ferguson was pleased with the effort, and happy to see his team come out of the night healthy.

"It's always positive to come out of these scrimmages without injuries," Ferguson said.  "The game tempo was awesome, with plenty of scoring chances.  It was good to evaluate the structure and pace of the play.  It was about what we expected."

In between periods, players took the ice in a variety of skills competitions.  Senior forward Nolan Youngmun edged Parayko to defend his fastest skater title.  Jones led the way in the shootout competition, earning eight saves, while pitching a shutout.  A pair of defenseman put up triple digits in the hardest shot challenge.  Freshman blue liner Kyle Froese hit 100 MPH with his slap shot from the hash marks.  Only to be out done by Parayko, whose clapper was clocked at 101 MPH, as the captain claimed the title for 2014.

The exhibition season continues for the Nanooks, as they host the Mustangs of Western Ontario University October 3rd at the Carlson Center.  Puck drops at 7:07 on the Olympic size ice.
