BARCELONA, Spain
– Alaska's two-time Great Northwest Athletic Conference Player of the Year, Brad Oleson, is a champion once again.

Oleson, who played for the Nanooks' men's basketball team for three seasons from 2002-05, helped FC Barcelona win its 18th Liga Endesa (ACB) title with a thrilling 83-81 victory against Real Madrid Thursday night at the Palau Blaugrana.

Barça won the best-of-five series 3-1, which marked the second time in Oleson's career that he was a member of a Spanish league team to hoist the national crown. He won his first league championship back in 2010 as a member of Caja Laboral.

The North Pole, Alaska native played a pivotal role in Barcelona's fourth-quarter heroics on Friday. With the game knotted at 76-76, Oleson found teammate Maciej Lampe, who drained the go-ahead three pointer with 21.1 seconds remaining to give Barça a 79-76 advantage.

After sealing the game by converting on a pair of free throws with eight seconds remaining, it was Oleson who took in the inbounds pass to run out the clock and he launched the ball into the air in celebration as triple zeros read on the scoreboard, much to the delight of the home crowd in Barcelona.

In the four games, he averaged 11.8 points per game after shooting 58 percent (15-26) from the floor, including a stellar 60 percent (9-15) mark from three-point range. He shot a perfect 8-for-8 from the free throw line and tallied seven rebounds with five assists.

Over the final three games in the championship series, the 2011 Nanook Hall of Fame inductee averaged 14 points per outing, including series highs of 17 points (7-8 FG) and six rebounds in game two.

All of us with the Alaska Nanooks and the Nanook Nation would like to congratulate our own Brad Oleson on winning his second Spanish league title.
