INDIANAPOLIS – Alaska set its sights on one thing at the beginning of the year and it is now one match away from achieving the goal in mind – win an 11th national title.

The NCAA Men's and Women's Rifle Committee announced the field for the 2014 NCAA Rifle Championships Thursday and it comes as no surprise that the second-ranked Nanooks are among the eight teams invited.

The championships will be held in Murray, Ky., on March 14-15 at the Pat Spurgin Rifle Range and CFSB Center on the campus of Murray State University.

Teams were selected based on the average of the three highest regular-season aggregate scores with no more than one match at a given site. The three-score average was added to the NCAA Qualifier score to determine the top eight seeds.

The Nanooks used their average of 4698.67 (4692-4702-4702) and added in their 4679 that they scored in the qualifier last weekend in Fairbanks. Alaska has already had one opportunity at a high-pressure match with the NCAA-style when it won the inaugural Patriot Rifle Conference Championship in Columbus, Ohio.

Joining Alaska in the annual championship is Jacksonville State, Kentucky, Memphis, Nebraska, Texas Christian, the U.S Military Academy and West Virginia. In addition to the 40 competitors across the eight teams, eight other individuals from different programs were selected based on scores submitted following the qualifier.

The championships commence on March 14 with the smallbore three-position (60 shots) discipline, followed by air rifle (60 shots) on March 15. The overall team champion with the highest combined smallbore and air gun score will be crowned champion.
