Second-Ranked Rifle Fires 4679 in NCAA Qualifier

FAIRBANKS – Sitting comfortably when it comes to a berth to the NCAA Championship, there was no pressure on the second-ranked Alaska rifle team when it shot Saturday in the NCAA qualification match.
 
The Nanooks, winners of the inaugural Patriot Rifle Conference, completed the regular season with a team score of 4679 at the E.F. Horton Rifle Range, which will keep them safely in the top three with No. 1 West Virginia and No. 3 Kentucky.
 
Alaska fired scores of 2333 in smallbore and 2346 in air gun to amass 4679. Also in the match were No. 17 Nevada and No. 20 Texas-El Paso. The Wolfpack turned in a 4561 while the Miners bested Nevada by two with a 4563.
 
The Nanooks turned in the top four scores in smallbore while air gun had Alaska with spots one through seven, despite only five student-athletes accounting for the team score.
 
Junior Ryan Anderson (Great Falls, Va./Biological Sciences) turned in a smallbore match high of 587, followed by 583s from both sophomores Tim Sherry (Highlands Ranch, Colo./Mechanical Engineering) and Lorelie Stanfield (Fairbanks, Alaska/English).
 
Junior Mats Eriksson (Malung, Sweden) completed the team's smallbore score with a 580 and senior Mike Liuzza (New Orleans, La./Business Administration) added a 572.
 
On the air rifle side, Sherry and Liuzza both had 588s but Sherry earned the top nod with his 44 center shots, compared to Liuzza's 41. Anderson fired a 586 and Eriksson rounded out the team's tally with a 584. Stanfield also scored 583 in the air gun match.
 
Following the NCAA five, sophomore Alexis Nardone (Winchester, Mass./Business Administration) tied Stanfield with a 583 while sophomore Keanu Paikai (Honolulu, Hawaii/Mechanical Engineering) added a 582.
 
UTEP was led by Korina Rodriguez and Jessica Kinder. Rodriguez shot a 575 in smallbore while Kinder had a 581 in air gun. For Nevada, Haunani Akana tallied a 579 in smallbore and a 581 in air rifle.
 
The official team and individual lists will be announced next week for the NCAA Championship, which takes place March 14-15 at the Pat Spurgin Rifle Range in Murray, Ky.
