Box Score FAIRBANKS – Alaska Anchorage had nine service aces and the Nanooks committed 22 scoring errors in a three set loss to the visiting Seawolves on Saturday afternoon in Great Northwest Athletic Conference play.
Alaska fell in straight sets by scores of 11-25, 23-25 and 12-25 to the number 25 team in the country.
Brooke Mattice recorded a team-high 10 kills to lead the Nanooks in the attack. Katelyn Zanders had a match-high 11 kills while Broke Pottle contributed 10 for the Seawolves.
Anchorage started the match with malicious intent, as they scored the game's first seven points and by as many as eight (11-3) in the opening exchanges. The Nanooks would not recover in the first set, and dropped the frame by a score of 25-11.
The story of the second set was much different, however, as the Nanooks attempted a rugged comeback to level the match. Neither team was able to gain any advantage early on, as Alaska visibly frustrated the Seawolves attack. Late in the set, the Nanooks took a 23-22 lead with a Mattice kill putting themselves in prime position to draw the game to a 1-1 tie. However, the Seawolves were able to the game's next three points, in objectionable fashion, to seal the second set.
The visitors then strung a pair of five point runs together, including the match's last five points, to claim a 25-12 third set victory, earning their 20th win for the year.
Alaska closes out the season next weekend with games against Western Washington (Thursday) and Simon Fraser (Saturday).
