Special Teams Haunt Nanooks in Loss to Northern Michigan

Box Score

FAIRBANKS – Northern Michigan scored four power play goals and the Nanooks could only beat Mathias Dahlstrom once on 30 shots as Alaska fell, 4-1, to the No. 19 team in the nation on Saturday night in Western Collegiate Hockey Association play.

The Wildcats (8-3-1, 5-3-0 WCHA) were 4-of-7 with the man advantage, including two goals stemming from a pair of major penalties called against the Nanooks (7-7-0, 2-6-0 WCHA). Alaska, meanwhile, was 0-3 on the power play.

Northern Michigan got on the board first at the 7:14 mark of the first period when Jake Baker took advantage of the first Nanook penalty of the game. Alaska was not behind for long, however, as Nolan Huysmans finished off a move from Trevor Campbell and Jared Linnell to tie the game at one.

Unfortunately for Alaska the Wilcats would score another power play goal to close the first period, taking a 2-1 lead into the break. Northern Michigan then added a pair of unanswered power play goals in the second and third period to close out the game in their favor.

The Nanooks will attempt to bounce back quickly, as it travels to Mankato to battle Minnesota State next weekend.
