Nanook Swimmers Fall Just Short Against Cal State East Bay

FAIRBANKS – For the second day in a row, the Alaska swimming program came within the final relay of defeating Cal State East Bay, for the first time in its history. On Saturday, the Nanooks fell by a score of 107-98 at the Patty Pool.

Alaska's 400 freestyle relay team of Katie Stark, Noelle Graham, Gabi Summers and Nga Nguyen were within a second (3:38.88 to 3:38.02) of pulling the upset.

"We've never been this close to beating them in dual meet competition so we're excited," said head coach Scott Lemley. "The Husky Invitational is coming up in a couple weeks and that's when we'll be fully rested and ready to swim the meet we want to swim. The girls can't wait."

The Nanooks won five individual events and took home the top spot in the 200 yard medley relay. Victorie Adams, Nguyen, Margot Adams and Martha Hood raced the medley relay in 1:47.63 to win.

V. Adams then took home the individual crown in the 200 freestyle with a time of 1:56.76 while Hood won the 50 free in a time of 24.56. M. Adams was the final dual winner for the Nanooks as she won the 200 fly with a time of 2:09.44.

Stark took first place in the 100 free with a time of 54.05 while Gabi Summers was the fastest swimmer in the 400 individual medley, as she swam it in 4:41.28.

The Husky Invitational is Alaska's next competition, and spans Dec. 5-Dec. 7 in Federal Way, Washington.
