Box Score FAIRBANKS – Led by four players in double-digit scoring figures, the Alaska Nanook women's basketball team started the season in fine form, with a 95-72 win over Chaminade in the regular season opener at the Patty Center.
Autumn Childers and Jordan Wilson each had 18 points to lead the Nanooks, while Kailee Skjold contributed 17 and Victoria Ellerby had 11.
Childers also led the team with four assists and shot 3-5 from beyond the arc, also best among the Nanooks. Wilson and Skjold each posted double-doubles as they also had respective rebounding totals of 11 and 10.
As a team, the Nanooks dominated inside as they out-rebounded the Silverswords 53-31 and scored 46 points in the paint. Of Alaska's 53 rebounds, 19 were offensive, leading to 12 second chance points.
Defensively, the Nanooks were sound as well, forcing 23 turnovers, including 13 steals led by Victoria Milton's four. Alaska scored 19 points off the 23 turnovers, which was evidence of the hard work put in on defense in the preseason.
Chaminade did pull within three points early in the second half, but the Nanooks pulled away after going on a ten point run that concluded with just over five minutes to play.
Alaska (1-0) next takes on Holy Names (Calif.) as the second game of the PAC West/GNAC Challenge. The Hawks lost on Friday to Alaska Anchorage, 92-35.
