FAIRBANKS – The Alaska swimming team started its 2014-15 season with a 117-88 win over conference foes Azusa Pacific University yesterday at the Patty Center pool. Overall the Nanooks won eight of the eleven events en route to the victory.
Leading the way for Alaska was
Victoria Adams who won two individual events and was part of the 400 yard medley relay team which also placed first. Adams won the 200 individual medley with a time of 2:10.92 and the 100 yard backstroke with a first-place finish in 1:01.00.
Joining V. Adams on the relay team which won in a time of 3:57.98 was
Nga Nguyen,
Margot Adams and
Katie Stark. Nguyen, M. Adams and Stark would all also win individual events.
Nguyen won the 100 breastroke (1:07.47), M. Adams placed first in the 100 butterfly (57.90) and Stark was the top swimmer in the 100 freestyle with a time of 54.10.
Also winning events for the Nanooks were
Gabi Summers (200 freestyle/1:58.07) and
Martha Hood (50 free/24.81).
"Azusa Pacific is one of the strongest teams in our conference," said head coach
Scott Lemley. "They made the move from NAIA to NCAA Division II and will be a force to reckon with. Though they are a young strong team, we had the maturity and depth to prevail today."
"Today's results really show the commitment our swimmers have made to the new strength program Chris Ritter set up for us ," continued Lemley. "Even though they're tired they have the confidence in their training both in the pool and in the weight room to persevere."
Alaska one again faces Azusa Pacific, today, at noon at the Patty Pool.
