Nanooks Unable to Hold On in First Set; Lose 3-0 in Billings

Box Score BILLINGS, Mont. – Despite a thunderous .563 hitting percentage from freshman Riley Podowicz, the Alaska Nanook volleyball team was defeated by Great Northwest Athletic Conference foe, Montana State Billings, on Thursday, in three sets.

Alaska (2-16, 2-8) dropped a heartbreaker, 25-27, after leading 19-15 and 23-20, in the first game, before losing 18-25 and 17-25 in games two and three, respectively.

Podowicz recorded nine kills on 16 total attacks with no errors to lead the Nanook attack. The freshman also contributed two service aces and a block to round out an impressive day.

"Riley was outstanding tonight," said head coach Mallory Larranaga. "Our passers allowed us to run her a lot of quick attacks and she did a great job of finding the holes in the block."

Sam Harthun had a team-high 12 kills and led the team defensively with 15 digs. Miranda Grieser and Dylan Branch orchestrated the offense with 23 and 10 assists, respectively.

The Yellowjackets were led on the attack by Monica Grismund who had a match-high 14 kills on 24 attacks (.500 hitting percentage, two errors). Defensively MSUB had three players record double-digit digs as

Krista Norris (13), Haley Wells (12) and Kyndal Williams (11) all quelled the Alaskan attack.

The Nanooks now travel to Seattle where they look to bounce back against the Falcons of Seattle Pacific University. The match is set for Saturday, October 18 at 6:00 p.m.
