FAIRBANKS - The No. 2, nationally ranked Alaska Nanook rifle team started off the season in a big way on Saturday by defeating the University of Tennessee-Martin Skyhawks 4682-4605 at the E.F. Horton Range.

The charge was led in smallbore by defending National Champion, junior
Tim Sherry who shot a 583/600 followed by redshirt sophomore
Soren Butler and junior
Lorelie Stanfield each with a 582/600. Rounding out the scoring team for the Nanooks were Sagen Maddelena and
Mats Eriksson with a 577 and 575, respectively. The Nanooks totaled a 2324 for the day in smallbore.

On the Skyhawks side, sophomore Dacotah Faught was the top smallbore shooter of the day with a 584. Her team would contribute to a team score of 2271.

In air rifle, the top score of the day went to redshirt freshman Maddelena of the Nanooks with a 595/600. Close behind her was Butler with a 592 on the day. Rounding out the scoring team was Sherry, Eriksson and Stanfield with a 586, 585 and 583, respectively. The Nanooks tallied a 2358 on the day in the air rifle portion of the match

For the Skyhawks, Dana Maurizio led the team with a 590/600. The Skyhawks tallied an air rifle score of 2334 on the day.

"We saw a lot of good things happening today," stated head coach
Dan Jordan. "However, we have high goals set for ourselves this season and there are a lot of things for us to work as a team still."

"It was a good start to the season," stated Butler. "We have some issues to work on but I know everyone on the team has the same goal in mind at the end of the season and we will work hard to get there."

The Nanooks are back in action tomorrow morning against UT-Martin, when first shots are down range at 8 a.m. AKT.Â
