No. 1 Rifle to Battle No. 7 Air Force & U.S. National Team this Week

FAIRBANKS – Top-ranked Alaska will open the 2014 calendar schedule with a road match against the No. 7 Air Force Academy, followed by an exhibition match versus the resident athletes for the United States National Team.

Both matches will take place at the Olympic Training Center in Colorado Springs, Colo., as the Nanooks take on the Falcons Thursday and the national squad Sunday. Both matches are set for 9 a.m. MST starts.

Alaska was supposed to travel to Camp Perry, Ohio, for an air gun match on Jan. 11-12, but due to a rescheduling of the match, the Nanooks decided to stay in Colorado and pick up a high-pressure exhibition with the U.S. team.

On the range this week for the 'Nooks are senior Mike Liuzza (New Orleans, La./Business Administration), juniors Ryan Anderson (Great Falls, Va./Biological Sciences) and Mats Eriksson (Malung, Sweden/Business Administration), sophomores Jaimie Barnes (Fairbanks, Alaska/Justice), Tim Sherry (Highlands Ranch, Colo./Mechanical Engineering) and Lorelie Stanfield (Fairbanks, Alaska/English) and freshman Dan Geer (Colorado Springs, Colo./Business Administration).

In addition, the team will also be competing in tryouts for the U.S.A. World Cup this week, which takes place in Fort Benning, Ga., the week following this March's NCAA Championship. The shooters will compete in the three-position event Tuesday and Wednesday and the prone event on Friday and Saturday. We will provide an update next week should any Nanook qualify for the national event.

The Nanooks are the top-ranked collegiate team in the latest Collegiate Rifle Coaches Association poll and have won all six of their matches this season, which included a pair of victories against the former No. 1 team, Kentucky (Nov. 23-24). They have broken the program record for score twice this season, and have shot the three highest scores in program history during the 2013-14 season.
