Box Score BOWLING GREEN, Ohio – Bowling Green scored twice in the third period, once shorthanded and
Tommy Burke picked up his third shutout of the season to lead the hosts to a 3-0 Western Collegiate Hockey Association victory against Alaska Friday night at the BGSU Ice Arena.
Burke led the Falcons (12-9-4, 9-6-2 WCHA) to their fourth win in a row after stopping the Nanooks (8-10-3, 5-9-1 WCHA) on all 16 of their shot attempts, improving his season record to 9-2-4. BGSU saw its three goals come from
Bryce Williamson,
Ryan Carpenter and
Adam Berkle while
Dan DeSalvo notched a pair of assists, both in the third stanza.
Freshman goaltender
Davis Jones (St. Albert, Alberta/Business Administration) made 31 saves in the loss as he dropped to 4-5-1 in his rookie campaign. He stopped 13 shots in the second and 14 in the final 20 minutes.
It was Alaska's first shutout loss since Feb. 22, 2013, when it fell 1-0 to Michigan State at home. The win for BGSU also snapped a three-game losing skid to Alaska at BGSU Ice Arena and was its first win at home against the 'Nooks since Nov. 13, 2009.
The Falcons outshot the Nanooks 34-16 and controlled the face-off circle 37-26. The 'Nooks held the blocks advantage, by the count of 16-11, as junior defenseman
Trevor Campbell (Kansas City, Mo./Mechanical Engineering) led the game with five.
Alaska went a perfect 5-for-5 on the penalty kill but failed on both of its power-play opportunities.
The game went without a score for nearly the first two periods but the Falcons finally opened the scoring at the 17:14 mark of the second period.
Cam Wojtala controlled the puck behind the net on the right side and he dished it in the slot where Williamson fired a one-timer shot past Jones on the stick side to make it 1-0.
BGSU took a 2-0 lead at 11:36 of the third on a redirect goal. DeSalvo wound up for a shot from the point and Carpenter put his stick on the puck in traffic, deflecting it past Jones for the two-goal lead.
The Nanooks had a power-play chance later on in the frame but after the Falcons dumped it down, senior defenseman
Michael Quinn (Surrey, British Columbia/Geography) took a spill going after the puck behind the net. DeSalvo scooped it up and fed it to a crashing Berkle, who buried it for the insurance goal at 14:17, accounting for the third and final score of the game.
Alaska and Bowling Green will complete the weekend set Saturday at 7:07 p.m. EST. The game will be televised locally on KFXF Fox 7 Fairbanks on a tape delay (approx. 4 p.m.) with the beginning of game being shown immediately following Fox's NFL playoffs coverage of the New Orleans and Seattle NFC Divisional game.
