BIRMINGHAM, Ala. – For the Alaska women's swim team, March 8, 2013 will be a day the Nanooks will soon not forget.

Junior Bente Heller (Hamburg, Germany/Communication) won the program's first-ever national championship as she captured the individual title in the 100 backstroke Friday evening at the CrossPlex Complex.

Heller turned in a varsity-record time of 54.26 seconds as she out touched Ashland's Julie Widmann by .16 after she clocked a time of 54.42. The junior from Germany improved over a quarter of a second from her preliminary mark of 54.53, which seeded her first for the final.

By virtue of her finishing inside the top eight, she once again earned All-America honors and is now a five-time All-American as an individual. She also has three relay All-America accolades.

The championship's final day will get started at 7 a.m. (AKST) Saturday morning in Birmingham. Catch the action live on ncaa.com.
