ANCHORAGE – The Alaska men's and women's skiing teams had an impressive showing on day one of the 2013 Alaska Nordic Cup, taking the top-three spots on the women's side and the top-five positions on the men's side on Saturday morning at a very foggy Kincaid Park.

The Nanook women tallied a team time of 46 minutes, 41.9 seconds while the men clocked a time of 1:22:29.7 for a combined 2:09:11.6. The Nanooks' mark is 7:07.9 ahead of the Seawolves, who put together a 2:16:19.5. UAA's breakdown was a 48:20.0 in the women's race and 1:27:59.5 from the men. The teams' total time comes from the top-three women and top-three men from both squads.

Freshman
Nichole Bathe (Madison, Wis./Elementary Education) won women's five-kilometer individual start freestyle technique with a time of 15:21.7, taking the race by a whole nine seconds. Redshirt junior
Alyson McPhetres (Chugiak, Alaska/Foreign Language and Geological Engineering) was runner-up in 15:30.7 while senior
Heather Edic (Fairbanks, Alaska/Civil Engineering) took third in 15:49.5.

Kryston McPhetres (Chugiak, Alaska/Emergency Management) was seventh in 16:21.6 and junior
Heidi O'Connor-Brook (Whitehorse, Yukon/Music) crossed the line in eighth with a time of 16:40.9.

In the men's 10K freestyle technique, sophomore
Michael Fehrenbach (Saint Märgen, Germany/Mechanical Engineering) was the top finisher with a time of 27:18.2, edging out his teammate, junior
Logan Hanneman (Fairbanks, Alaska/Mechanical Engineering, who finished in 27:19.8. Junior
Jonas Löffler (Saint Märgen, Germany/Business Administration) rounded out the men's team score after he completed the trek in 27:51.7.

Also for the men's skiers, redshirt freshman
Isaac Lammers (Eagle River, Alaska/Mechanical Engineering) was fourth in 27:57.3 and redshirt sophomore
Stefan Hajdukovich (Fairbanks, Alaska/Business Administration) crossed the finish line in fifth with a mark of 28:22.0. Senior
Max Olex (Aalen, Germany/Business Administration) placed seventh in 28:51.2 and redshirt sophomore
Kenneth Brewer (Chugiak, Alaska/Biological Sciences) rounded out the squad in eighth with a time of 29:14.9.

UAA's women were led by
Patricia Sprecher, who took fourth in the women's 5K with a time of 15:58.1. She was followed by
MacKenzie Sprecher in fifth (16:01.6) and
Synnove Bruland in sixth (16:20.3).

Former Nanook
Andrew Arnold paced the Seawolf men in sixth place with a clocked time of 28:49.7.
Brandon Brewster took ninth (29:17.9) while
Davis Dunlap completed the team time in 10th place (29:51.9).

Alaska and UAA will complete the Alaska Nordic Cup Sunday morning at Hillside Park in Anchorage with the mixed-gender, classic relay, in which two women will both ski a 5K leg and two men will each ski a 10K leg.

The Nanooks will look to claim their seventh Nordic Cup title in now the 10 years of its existence (6-2-1).
