Jones Named WCHA Rookie of the Week for Second Time

MADISON, Wis. – Freshman netminder Davis Jones (St. Albert, Alberta/Business Administration) stepped up in a big way to lead Alaska to a Saturday night road victory and has been recognized as the Western Collegiate Hockey Association Rookie of the Week, the league office announced Tuesday afternoon.

Jones earned the weekly accolade for the second time this season after helping the Nanooks (7-8-3, 4-7-1 WHCA) to an impressive 5-1 win at Bemidji State on Dec. 14 in the team's final game of the 2013 calendar year.

In his first start since Nov. 23 at Ferris State, he allowed just one goal after making 25 saves on 26 shots (.962). Along with his defensive unit, he blanked the Beavers on all eight power-play chances. The penalty-kill's 8-for-8 success is tied for the second-most successful penalty-kills without allowing a score since Dallas Ferguson has been the Alaska head coach (six years).

For the season, Jones is 3-3-1 in his seven appearances with a team-best 428:00 of time on ice. He has compiled a 2.80 goals-against average and has a .901 save percentage with 183 saves on 203 shots faced.

His victory, coupled with a 3-3 tie on Friday from junior Sean Cahill (Calgary, Alberta/Business Administration), earned Alaska three points out of the possible four points – the best of the conference season (six series played).

Alaska will return to action Jan. 3-4, 2014, when it hosts Minnesota State at the Carlson Center. The puck drops at 7:07 p.m. (AST) both nights.
