Hockey Ties Bemidji State 3-3 in Wild Series Opener

Box Score BEMIDJI, Minn. – Sixty minutes would not be enough hockey for both Alaska and Bemidji State but after a scoreless overtime period, the teams skated to a 3-3 Western Collegiate Hockey Association tie on Friday night in front of 3,208 fans at Sanford Center.

The Nanooks (6-8-3, 3-7-1 WCHA) led 3-2 late in the third period but a Matt Prapavessis goal with an empty net and extra attacker at 18:20 knotted the game at three goals each to force overtime. The stalemate was the Beavers' (5-8-6, 5-4-4 WCHA) third in a row and the first for the Nanooks in conference play.

Sophomore center Matthew Friese (Wasilla, Alaska/Business Administration), rookie center Shawn Hochhausen (Kelowna, British Columbia/Petroleum Engineering) and junior left wing Garrick Perry (Apple Valley, Minn./Communication) all scored for Alaska, with each goal coming off turnovers while junior goaltender Sean Cahill (Calgary, Alberta/Business Administration) made 18 saves in net to earn a tie, taking his season mark to 1-2-1.

BSU was led by Prapavessis, who scored twice in the third period, while the other tally came from the Cory Ward in the first. Ward also assisted on the game-tying goal in the third. Jesse Wilkins kept his rookie record all ties, at 0-0-3, after he made 27 saves in the draw.

The Nanooks outshot the Beavers 30-21 on the night and held a 20-16 advantage in blocks while BSU led the way in the face-off circle 41-30. Both teams had plenty of man-advantage opportunities but managed just one goal on 11 combined power plays with Bemidji going 1-for-6 and Alaska going 0-for-5.

Teams wasted little time getting on the scoreboard with tallies early in the first period. Sophomore right wing Alec Hajdukovich (Fairbanks, Alaska/Business Administration) forced a turnover in the offensive zone. The puck went to Friese behind the net and his backhand shot beat Wilkins five-hole to put the Nanooks up 1-0 at 3:05.

Last weekend Friese assisted in Hajdukovich's first career goal and he returned the favor Friday, assisting on Friese's first of the season and second of his career.

Bemidji answered at 6:44 with a goal of its own to tie it at 1-1. Graeme McCormack fed the puck to Ward in the neutral zone, and upon crossing the blue line, his snapper went top shelf over the glove hand of Cahill for his league-leading 12th goal of the season.

Alaska regained the lead at 2-1 late in the second with a goal at 16:07. The Beavers lost the possession when Bob Kinne attempted to glove the puck and it fell back in the Nanooks' offensive zone. Hochhausen corralled the puck and fired a shot from between the circles that went through Wilkins' five-hole for his second score of the year.

The Beavers quickly tied it in the third period just 23 ticks into the frame. Off the face-off win, Radoslav Illo dished the puck to Prapavessis and his one-timer blast got past Cahill on his glove side to tie it at 2-2.

The 'Nooks grabbed a 3-2 lead 8:48 into the final stanza with a rare three-on-zero rush. Following a face-off win in the offensive zone, Bemidji turned the puck over and sophomore center Tyler Morley (Burnaby, British Columbia/Business Administration) rushed the length of the ice, creating an odd-man rush. With one man to beat, Prapavessis fell, allowing for it to be all Nanooks and Morley dished it across to Perry for the one-timer score over Wilkins' glove.

Bemidji sent Wilkins to the bench with just over two minutes remaining and off a draw in the offensive zone, Prapavessis wound up and took a shot from the point, beating Cahill to tie the game with 1:40 left, which would lead to overtime.

In the extra period, Alaska had two power-play opportunities and outshot BSU 5-0 but could not score, as the game ended in a 3-3 stalemate, with each team earning one point in the WCHA standings.

Alaska and Bemidji complete the two-game set and final conference series of the 2013 year Saturday night at 7:07 p.m. (CST). The game will be televised on KFXF Fox 7 in Fairbanks on a tape delay until 8 p.m. (AST). The game will be streamed live on WCHA TV and can also be heard on ESPN Radio 820 AM KCBF or online at 820sports.com.
