No. 14 LSSU Uses Big Second Period to Down Hockey, 4-1

Box Score SAULT STE. MARIE, Mich. – Fourteenth-ranked Lake Superior State used a string of three goals in just over six and a half minutes to defeat Alaska 4-1 in game one of the Western Collegiate Hockey Association series Friday night at Taffy Abel Arena.

Alex Globke found the net twice for the Lakers (5-1-1, 1-0-0 WHCA) and Eric Drapluk had one score and one assist while Dan Radke had a pair of helpers in the win. Andrew Dommett also provided an insurance goal for LSSU.

Laker goaltender Kevin Kapalka made 29 saves to improve to 2-0-1 on the season while freshman netminder Davis Jones (St. Albert, Alberta/Elementary Education) took the loss in his second straight outing for the Nanooks (4-3-2, 1-2-0 WHCA) after making 21 stops, dropping his season record to 2-2-1.

Junior defenseman Trevor Campbell (Kansas City, Mo./Mechanical Engineering) scored the lone goal for Alaska, his first of the season and third of his career. The 'Nooks outshot the Lakers 30-25 and had eight power-play chances on the evening but LSSU killed off each one. Alaska's penalty kill group also went 5-for-5 while a man down.

After a scoreless first that saw four penalties, three by Alaska, the Nanooks finally opened the scoring at the 6:00 mark of the second. Sophomore right wing Nolan Huysmans (Ponoka, Alberta/Business Administration) took the puck down ice on a 2-on-1 and fed it across from left to right and Campbell buried the give-and-go past Kapalka for the 1-0 lead.

After a missed opportunity to double the advantage with the puck ricocheting off the pipe, the Lakers squared it at 1-1 at the 12:12 mark when Globke beat Jones with a great move in front on a backhand shot.

LSSU built off that goal with another tally at 16:04 of the same period. Radke dished the puck cross-ice to Drapluk, who sniped it home for the 2-1 lead in favor of the hosts.

Globke struck again at 18:45 to give Lake Superior a 3-1 lead. Drapluk fired a shot from the point and Jones made the initial stop but Globke was there to collect the puck and scored his second of the night.

The Lakers extended the advantage to 4-1 at 5:35 of the third period after the Nanooks failed to clear it out of their own zone. Three Lakers played hot potato with the puck in front of the net and Dommett took a shot that beat a diving Jones on his stick side.

Late in the third, it appeared the Nanooks had scored for a second time with 2:45 to play off the stick of senior defenseman Michael Quinn (Surrey, British Columbia/Geography), but the officials ruled Huysmans, who was screening Kapalka out front, was in the crease and they disallowed the goal.

Alaska and Lake Superior will return to the ice Saturday night to complete the weekend set with a 7:07 p.m. (EST) start time.
