JACKSONVILLE, Ala. – The No. 1 Alaska rifle team completed its first road match of the season winning by the narrowest of margins against seventh-ranked Jacksonville State, 4674-4673, Thursday at the Gamecock Rifle Range.
The Nanooks (3-0) compiled scores of 2320 in smallbore and 2354 in air rifle while the Gamecocks (0-1) had a 2319 in smallbore and an identical 2354 in air gun.
Junior
Ryan Anderson (Great Falls, Va./Biological Sciences) and sophomore
Tim Sherry (Highlands Ranch, Colo./Mechanical Engineering) each fired match-highs in the respective disciplines as Anderson led all shooters with a 586 in smallbore while Sherry turned in a 594 in air rifle.
Also in smallbore, senior
Mike Liuzza (New Orleans, La./Business Administration) had a 580 while Sherry was right behind him with a 579. Junior
Mats Eriksson (Malung, Sweden/Business Administration) totaled 575 while rookie
Dan Geer (Colorado Springs, Colo./Business Administration) rounded out the team's score with a 572. Sophomore
Lorelie Stanfield (Fairbanks, Alaska/English) also turned in a 578 in smallbore.
In air gun, Eriksson was second to Sherry with a 589 and Liuzza shot a 586. Anderson fired a 585 while Stanfield added a 563 to complete the team's score. Geer also performed well in air rifle, with a 587.
Jacksonville State was led by
Dan McCall's 584 in smallbore and
Cole Tucker's 591 in air rifle. The Gamecocks had three others score 587 or better in air gun.
Alaska returns to action Saturday morning in Fort Worth, Texas, when it takes on 10th-ranked Texas Christian. That match will begin at 9 a.m. (CST) from the TCU Rifle Range.
