Nation’s Bests Collide as #2 Rifle Hosts #1 Kentucky this Weekend

FAIRBANKS – This weekend, the E.F. Horton Rifle Range, located downstairs at the Patty Center, will be the site of two matches featuring the No. 1 and No. 2 teams in the country as top-ranked Kentucky visits Fairbanks to take on second-ranked Alaska, Nov. 23-24.
 
In the latest Collegiate Rifle Coaches Association poll, released Wednesday, has the Wildcats (5-0) at the top spot for the third week in a row, while the Nanooks (4-0) are in second position for the second week running. Three weeks ago, both Kentucky and Alaska were tied for first.
 
Alaska is coming off a 2-0 road trip a couple weeks ago with a narrow one-point win (4674-4673) against No. 7 Jacksonville State on Nov. 7 and a 46-point victory (4692-4646) at then-No. 10 Texas Christian on Nov. 9.
 
The Wildcats took over No. 1 after besting the 'Nooks by a single point on Nov. 9 when they shot a 4693 in a convincing 100-point victory over Navy in Lexington, Ky. Prior to that weekend, the two programs had both shot a 4694 to claim the CRCA poll's top position.
 
Individually, junior Ryan Anderson (Great Falls, Va./Biological Sciences) ranks first in the country in smallbore with a score of 591 while ranking second in air rifle with a 596. Sophomore Tim Sherry (Highlands Ranch, Colo./Mechanical Engineering) is also tied for third in air gun with a 595 and fourth in smallbore with a 587.
 
With his career-best 593 a couple weeks ago in air rifle, senior Mike Liuzza (New Orleans, La./Business Administration) moved into a tie for seventh in that respective discipline.
 
Both matches are set to begin at 9 a.m. and are free to the public.
