NCAA Skiing Championships - Day 2 Complete Results
BOZEMAN, Mont. - As was the case on Wednesday, first-year men's skier
Logan Hanneman was the top finisher for the Alaska Nanooks on the final day of Nordic ski races at the 2012 NCAA Skiing Championships.
Hanneman took an hour and 7.8 seconds to complete the men's four-lap 20-kilometer classical mass start event on Friday morning at Bohart Ranch.
Utah's Miles Havlick was the race champion, crossing in 56:24.3, while host Montana State's
David Norris was second in 56:25.8 and Vermont's Franz Bernstein earned bronze in 56:40.8.
For the first two laps, Hanneman was a part of the top pack of 14 racers but couldn't sustain his pace for the final two after exhausting his reserves. Head coach
Scott Jerome was pleased with the result none the less.
"For Logan to finish 22nd (on Wednesday) and 23rd (today) after coming back from World Juniors and to be a freshman in the middle of the pack as a freshman is solid," Jerome said.
Junior
Tyler Kornfield improved on Wedensday's freestyle result, moving up a few places to take 34th in 1:02:12.4.
Alaska sophomore
Raphaela Sieber and junior
Marit Rjabov broke into the top-30 in the women's 15k, finishing 28th (58:11.1) and 29th (58:25.2), respectively.
"It was a better day for Raphaela and Marit, which was a positive for them," said Jerome.
The women's race, which was so tight at the finish a video review was required to decide its champion, was won by Vermont's Amy Glen in 53:32.1, one-tenth of a second ahead of Dartmouth's Sophie Caldwell (53:32.2).
Junior
Crystal Pitney rounded out Alaska's representatives in 39th (1:06:49.4).
"It was a tough (women's) race," said Jerome. "By the time the women started it was 45 or 50 degrees, which makes for a long day, but that's ski racing and we know we need to do better so we're going to review things and try to make adjustments so we have better results next year."
After the second day of Nordic races, the Nanooks remain in 13th place out of 21 teams represented at the national championship event with 81 points. Vermont took over as the overall points leader with 614, followed by Utah in second with 522 and Darmouth in third with 510, while Colorado (495) and Montana State (405.5) round out the top-five teams.
"We don't have any seniors so they all have a chance to come back next year and do better," added Jerome.
