KALAMAZOO, Mich - The Alaska Nanooks' hockey team rebounded from Friday night's narrow 2-1 let down at Western Michigan by minimizing their penalties and getting goals from four different skaters to earn a 4-1 victory over the #16 Broncos and a series split on Saturday night at Lawson Arena. Senior goalie
Scott Greenham made 37 saves in the win, his ninth and Alaska's 10th of the season.
In a reversal of fortune, the Nanooks found themselves with the man-advantage early in the game and sophomore defenseman
Michael Quinn capitalized on the chance for the early lead. He scored his third goal of the season at 6:27, with assistance from junior
Andy Taranto and sophomore
Cody Kunyk, to make it 1-0 at 6:27.
Junior center
Jarret Granberg tallied the game-winning goal at 4:50 of the second period for his ninth season marker and fifth in the last eight games. Seniors
Carlo Finucci and
Aaron Gens tallied assists on the score.
Centerman and junior
Adam Henderson trippled Alaska's lead with his third goal this season at 5:53. The play was set up by his linemates, senior
Justin Filzen and freshman
Garrick Perry.
WMU pulled its goalie Frank Slubowski in attempts to get back in the game, but the Nanooks held strong and sophomore
Colton Beck scored an empty-netter with help from Finucci and Gens at 19:07 to make it 4-0 for Alaska.
The Broncos' Mike Leone managed to spoil Greenham's shutout bid with just 25 seconds left in the game.
Alaska went 1-for-5 on the power-play and held their hosts scoreless in three opportunities of their own.
The 10th-place Nanooks return to host the seventh-place Lake Superior State Lakers next Friday and Saturday at the Carlson Center. It is their final regular-season league home series and the teams will face off at 7:05 p.m. both nights.
