COLUMBUS, Ohio – Rookie defenseman Colton Parayko scored the Nanooks only goal and his classmate and goalie John Keeney made 32 saves as the Alaska Nanooks tied the Ohio State Buckeyes 1-1 on Friday night at Value City Arena. The hosts outscored the Nanooks 2-1 in the shootout for the extra point in the Central Collegiate Hockey Association standings.

In a scoreless first period, the Nanooks were outshot 13-11 and each team had its chances to score. The Nanooks had three of their 11 shots on their only man-advantage opportunity of the opening frame, while the Buckeyes had the same amount in twice as many chances.

Back-to-back penalties by OSU, gave the Nanooks a prime opportunity to take the early lead and they made good on it. With Buckeye skaters Ryan Dzingle and Sam Jardine sitting in the penalty box, rookie defenseman connected on a backdoor feed from junior left wing Colton Parayko and tapped it past OSU goalie Brady Hjelle at 5:05. It was Parayko's third goal of the season and junior blueliner Michael Quinn also assisted on the 5-on-3 play that made it 1-0 for the visitors.

The Buckeyes tied the game just 15 seconds into the third period, when Max McCormick beat Keeney to make it 1-1. Despite a pair of minor penalties assesed by senior right wing Andy Taranto and a five-minute major and game misconduct to senior left wing Chad Gehon in the final five minutes of the game, the Nanooks and Keeney held strong keeping the score locked at one goal apiece to force overtime.

Neither team could change their fate in the extra session and the game recorded as a tie giving each one point in the league standings. In the shootout for the final point Alaska's lone tally was scored by rookie Tyler Morley in the second round, just after OSU's Riley Simpson made good on his chance in the first. The teams traded misses through three more rounds before Dzingle beat Keeney for the 2-1 advantage and shootout win.

For the game the Nanooks outshot the Buckeyes 35-34 and were 1-for-4 with the man advantage. They were 8-for-8 on the penalty kill, turning aside 15 shots over 19 minutes.

The teams play a rematch on Saturday night at 7:05 p.m. EST.
