FAIRBANKS, Alaska – Anderson surged out to an early 17-2 lead and never looked back as it cruised to an 81-48 victory against the Alaska women's basketball team on day two of the 2012 Mt. McKinley Bank North Star Invitational on Friday night at the Patty Center.
Amanda Parris led a very balanced AU attack as she led the Trojans (3-3) with a team-high 13 points. Kimberly Major chipped in nine points while six others scored eight points. Alissa Diaz and Madison Floyd, who were among the eight-point scorers, both tied for a game-high four assists.
Junior forward
Jacqueline Lovato (Gunnison, Colo./Business administration) scored a game- and season-high 15 points for the Nanooks (0-5) while junior guard
April Fultz (Rialto, Calif./Political science) had 10 points and six rebounds and senior guard
Taylor Altenburg (Elko, Nev./Criminal justice) chipped in eight points and five boards.
The Trojans shot a little less than 42-percent while the Nanooks struggled from the field, shooting just shy of 28-percent. AU edged Alaska 46-42 on the boards and forced 20 turnovers to its 13. Anderson outscored Alaska in the paint (28-16), off turnovers (19-2) and on second-chance opportunities (16-10).
AU opened the game with 11 quick points in the opening 2:02, forcing Alaska into a timeout. It extended the margin to 17-2 just over three and a half minutes in and before the crowd of 201 knew it, the Nanooks found themselves in a 20-point hole, trailing 27-7 with 11:38 to go in the first. The Trojans closed the first half with five straight to lead 48-24 at the break.
Alaska showed signs of life early in the second as it trimmed the deficit to 17 at 55-38 with just under 12 to play, but over the next three and a half minutes, Anderson went on a 12-4 run to up the advantage to 67-42.
The Nanooks close out their home tournament Saturday at 7:30 p.m. against the Winona State Warriors (4-1), who
beat the Upper Iowa Peacocks 70-40 in the first game Friday. UIU and Anderson play in the first game of session three at 5:15 p.m.
