FAIRBANKS, Alaska - The Alaska Nanooks sent their two seniors and head coach out in style in the final home match of the season as they defeated Montana State-Billings 3-1 in Great Northwest Athletic Conference volleyball on Saturday afternoon at the Patty Center.
The Nanooks (6-16, 4-12 GNAC) won the match against the Yellowjackets (10-14, 7-9 GNAC) by scores of 25-23, 23-25, 25-21 and 25-17.
It was final home match for seniors
Allison Oddy (Chilliwack, B.C./Social Work) and
Reilly Stevens (Riverside, Calif./Biology) as well as the last home match for 13-year head coach
Phil Shoemaker, as he will retire at the end of the season.
Freshman outside hitter
Sam Harthun (Oregon City, Ore./Photojournalism) turned in a match-best 20 kills to go with a .310 hitting percentage and 10 digs. Stevens was one off her career-high with 16 kills as the she hit .333 along with 15 digs. Freshman middle blocker
Megan Morrison (Spring Hill, Fla./Mathematics) tied her career-best kill total with 15 as she also hit for .306.
Freshman setter
Katlyn Mataya (Mount Vernon, Wash./Psychology) dished out a match-best 59 assists and contributed 11 digs while Oddy had 27 digs to lead all players in the back row. Sophomore middle blocker
Britt Glaeser (Fairbanks, Alaska/Business) was also one shy of matching her career-best in kills with nine.
The Nanooks hit .307 as a team (71-20-166) and outscored the the 'Jackets 5-2 on service aces. It also led in assists (65-54) and digs (73-64) despite being outblocked 10-3.
MSUB was paced by
Monica Grimsrud, who had a team-high 16 kills and 12 digs.
Taylor Adams chipped in 13 kills and hit .440 as she had four block assists and
Julianna Evola added 11 kills with a .370 clip.
Kyndal Williams tallied 49 assists and
Erin Compton had 17 digs.
Jody Lutz also contributed seven kills and five block assists.
The Nanooks hit the road next week to end the regular season as they head to Central Washington on Nov. 15 and Northwest Nazarene on Nov. 17.
