MARQUETTE, Mich.
- It was a tough night on the road for the Alaska Nanooks hockey team as they surrenderd four goals in the third period to suffer a 7-3 loss at the hands of the Northern Michigan Wildcats on Saturday at the Berry Events Center.

Senior defenseman Aaron Gens and sophomore forward Cody Kunyk led the Nanooks in the loss with a power-play goal and an assist apiece, while sophomore defenseman Michael Quinn tallied Alaska's third and only even-strength goal.

For the second straight night NMU opened the scoring, when a five-minute major for checking from behind whistled against Alaska's Garrick Perry set the home team up for their first strike. It took just nine seconds for the 'Cats to pounce and take the early 1-0 advantage, when Andrew Cherniwchan beat Greenham at 15:59.

After killing off the remaining 50 seconds of Perry's major to start the middle frame, the momentum swung in the Nanooks favor and they answered back with Gen's power-play strike at 2:05 to make it 1-1. Senior Carlo Finucci and Kunyk assisted on the score.

NMU's Matt Thurber gave the hosts their advantage back at 8:25 when he beat Greenham with assistance from Tyler Gron.

Cherniwchan notched his second power-play goal of the game at 15:17 to make it 3-1, but Kunyk answered for the visitors at 16:25 to cut the deficit back to one goal. Sophomore Colton Beck and Gens tallied assists on the man-advantage tally that made it 3-2 heading into the second intermission.

Trailing in the game heading into the third period for the second straight night, the Blue and Gold looked to pull off another comeback and even the score. The 'Cats would have none of it though as they exploded with a four-goal third-period to put the game out of reach, despite Quinn's goal at 12:36.

NMU got two makers from Thurber, his second and third of the game, and one from Mitch Jones and the last from Cherniwchan for his third of the game.

The Nanooks outshot their hosts 40-31, while going 2-for-7 on the power play and 4-for-6 on the penalty kill.

Greenham made 24 saves and NMU's netminder Jared Coreau turned aside 37.

Alaska continues on their two-week road trip with next weekend's series at Ferris State.
