Swimming Rolls to 144-60 Win Against CMU in Final Dual Meet

Meet Results

FAIRBANKS, Alaska – The Alaska women's swim team wrapped up its regular season in style, with a dominating 144-60 dual victory against Colorado Mesa after winning every event on Saturday afternoon at the Patty Center Pool.

“We've been on the other side of these meets and it isn't fun,” head coach Scott Lemley said. “Though CMU is a good program and a well-coached team, we were on this weekend and they were not.”

It was another record-setting performance for the Nanooks in the 200 medley relay as the tandem of sophomore Bente Heller (Hamburg, Germany/Albrecht Thzer Gymnasium) and freshmen Genevieve Johnson (Fresno, Calif./University), Margot Adams (Anchorage, Alaska/Frontier Charter) and Danielle Lyons (Prince Albert, Saskatchewan/St. Mary's) broke the pool record with a time of one minute, 50.1 seconds.

The foursome broke the three-year old record, set by Drury University's squad which went on to set a national meet record and win the national title in the event.

“I believe we truly have one of the best medley relays in the country,” Lemley said. “We're still ranked sixth though we're only a second or so slower than the top-ranked team from UC San Diego. They will be our chief competition at our conference meet and our chief competition at nationals.”

Lyons, along with sophomore Ashley Crowe (Billings, Mont.) and freshman Gabi Summers (Cheyenne, Wyo./Central) each won two individual races for the Nanooks.

Lyons first won the 400 individual medley by 13 seconds with a time of 4:36.10 and later won the 500 freestyle by 14 seconds after hitting the wall in 5:20.03. Crowe opened individual competition with an easy win in the 1,650 free after besting the rest of the competition by nearly two minutes in 17:48.23. She also won the 200 butterfly in 2:14.57. Summers had a pair of comfortable wins, as she took the 200 free in 1:57.22 and the 200 backstroke in 2:10.78.

Other winners against the Mavericks included Heller, Adams and Johnson. Heller won the 50 free in 24.63, Adams cruised in the 100 free in 53.49 and Johnson edged teammate Lauren Bailey by a half second in the 200 breaststroke with a time of 2:35.12.

Alaska closed the meet with an impressive win in the 400 free relay. The team of Heller, Summers, Adams and Johnson won by almost 13.5 seconds as they completed the event in 3:28.28.

The Nanooks begin their postseason on Feb. 8-11 at the Pacific Collegiate Swim and Dive Conference Championship, which will be held at the Splash! La Miranda Regional Aquatic Center in La Miranda, Calif.

“The whole focus now becomes preparing for our conference meet which begins a little over a week from now,” Lemley said.
