FAIRBANKS, Alaska - Sophomore forward
Cody Kunyk found the back of the net twice as the Alaska Nanooks rebounded for a 4-1 victory and series split against the Bowling Green Falcons Saturday night at the Carlson Center.
The Nanooks (8-12-4, 5-11-4-2 CCHA) won the season series against the Falcons (7-14-5, 2-12-4-3), winning three of the four contests. Earlier this season, Alaska blanked Bowling Green 3-0 and 2-0 on the road Nov. 25-26.
Kunyk scored his first tally of the night, when he picked off a pass in the attacking zone and beat BGSU's goalie Andrew Hammond at the 10:00 mark of the first period to tie the game at one. His lit the lamp for the second time just 41 seconds into the second period when
Colton Beck fired a shot from the right point and Kunyk redirected it past Bowling Green's netminder to give the 'Nooks a 2-1 advantage.
Alaska also got goals from senior forwards
Carlo Finucci and
Justin Filzen. Finucci scored at 9:03 of the second when he faked a pass to Filzen in a 2-on-1 and beat Hammond to make it 3-1. Filzen added the insurance goal, cashing in on an empty-net opportunity at 19:27 of the final frame.
BGSU's lone goal came from Adam Berkle, who gave the visitors the early lead at 3:43 of the first period after he converted a two-on-one pass from his linemate Dan DeSalvo.
Senior goalie
Scott Greenham made 17 saves on 18 shots faced, while his counterpart had 18.
The Nanooks continue their current homestand next weekend, hosting the Notre Dame Fighting Irish on Friday and Saturday at 7:05 p.m. at the Carlson Center.
