ANNAPOLIS, Md. - The Alaska Nanooks' rifle team continued to roll on its first road trip of 2012, capturing their second straight win by defeating the U.S. Naval Academy Midshipmen 4650-4588 on Thursday evening at the Bancroft Hall Rifle Range.
The Nanooks outshot Navy 2347-2318 in air rifle and 2303-2270 in smallbore. The win, which snapped the Mids string of four dual-match victories, improved No. 5 Alaska to 5-3 on the road and 6-4 overall on the season.
Leading the way in air rifle for the second straight match was rookie
Mats Eriksson, who set a new career-high with a 592. Sophomore Michael Liuzza tied his season-high with a 588 as the second-best shooter on the day. Freshman
Ryan Anderson was third for the Nanooks with a 584, while sophomores
Julia Redzia and
Anna Hjelmevoll notched socres of 583 and 581, respectively.
In smallbore, Liuzza also tied his season-best score with a match-high 579. Eriksson was second for the Nanooks with his season-high 577 and Anderson's 576, Redzia's 571 and Hjelmevoll's 569 rounded out the starters scores.
Alaska wraps up its venture in the Lower 48 tomorrow morning with a match at West Virginia (Morgantown, W.Va.) at 10 a.m. EST. It is their last road match of the regular season as they return to Alaska to train for a pair of home matches against Jacksonville State and Nebraska on Feb. 16 and 18. The match on the 18 will also serve as the NCAA Qualifier for all three teams.
