Rifle Opens 2012 With A Bang, Tops Citadel

CHARLESTON, S.C. –
 The Alaska Nanooks rifle team opened the 2012 portion of their season in winning fashion, defeating The Citadel Bulldogs' men's and women's teams 4,644 to 4,401 and 4,075, respectively,  in NCAA rifle action Tuesday evening at the Marksmanship Center.

Alaska outshot the Bulldogs' men 2,347-2,263 in air rifle and were 233 points better than The Citadel women, who compiled a team score of 2,114. Rookie Mats Eriksson led all shooters, firing his highest score of the year and a match-high 591. Eriksson's classmate Ryan Anderson followed with a 590, while sophomores Julia Redzia (588), Mike Liuzza (578) and Anna Hjelmevoll (576) rounded out Alaska's starters.

The host Bulldogs were led by Robert Jackson's 575. The women's team got a best score from Julia McCullohs, who fired a 571 on the day.

In smallbore, Redzia was tops on the day with a 579, tying her second highest total of the season, as the Nanooks combined for 2,297, while The Citadel men shot a 2,138 and the women amassed 1,961 collectively.

Liuzza was second best for the visitors with a 575, followed by Anderson's 574, Hjelmevoll's 569 and Eriksson's 567.

Nathan Moy led The Citadel men with a 550, while McCullohs was the best of the Bulldog women after firing a 523.

After a day off tommorrow, the Blue and Gold return to action on Thursday at the United States Naval Academy beginning at 3 p.m. EST, before wrapping up their road trip at West Virginia on Friday at 10 a.m. EST.
