BURNABY, British Colombia - Senior right side Karlee Skalla pounded out 16 kills and 16 digs to lead the Alaska Nanooks women's volleyball team to their first win of the season in a 3-1 triumph over Simon Fraser University Saturday evening.

After dropping the first set, 23-25, the blue and gold rallied to capture the second 25-22 and even the match. The momentum carried on and things began to click for the Nanooks, which translated to a 25-19 third set victory and a dominating 25-9 triumph to close the match.

"We started out kind of shaky, but we made a couple of changes and played much better with each set," head coach Phil Shoemaker said.

Junior middle blocker Casey Tidwell had another outstanding match for the Nanooks, hitting for a team-high .350 hitting percentage with seven kills and no errors in 20 attempts. Senior libero Allison Oddy had a match-high 17 digs and outside hitters Riley Stevens and Keri Knight got nine and seven kills apiece.

"It may not show up in the stats, but Riley and Keri both played big roles in helping us to settle down and steady ourselves after the first set." said Shoemaker.

Freshman setter Becky Martin dished out 41 assists in the victory, one the Nanooks will look to build on heading into next weekend's home matches.

Alaska hosts Montana State Billings (Sept. 29) and nationally ranked No. 15 Seattle Pacific (Oct. 1) at the Patty Center.
