FAIRBANKS, AK - A costly mistake in the third period and a solid netminder on the opposing end resulted in a less than super Sunday for the Alaska Nanooks as they were defeated 3-2 by the Ferris State Bulldogs on Superbowl Sunday, giving their guests a series sweep and six-point boost in the Central Collegiate Hockey Association standings.
Looking to wash away the bitter taste of Saturday's 2-1 defeat, Alaska sought to exact its revenge from the get-go. The Blue and Gold jumped out to a 1-0 lead midway through the first period on a goal by rookie center
Cody Kunyk from junior defenseman
Joe Sova. The Nanooks dominated the opening frame, outshooting their guests 13-2.
Ferris State managed to erase their debt in the second stanza with back-to-back four-on-four tallies just 49 seconds apart. FSU's Eric Alexander made good on a breakaway after deking the Nanooks' junior goalie Scott Greenham for the equalizer at 7:14.
The Bulldogs doubled up at 8:03, when Scott Wietecha connected on a shot from inside the right circle past Greenham's glove side to the near post for the 2-1 advantage.
Alaska answered exactly five minutes later, when senior left wing Dustin Sather buried his first goal of the season off a perfect feed from sophomore Jarrett Granberg. FSU commanded the second period, outshooting the host Nanooks 16-4.
Ferris State closed out the game scoring at 7:55 of the final frame with the tie-breaking and game-winning goal off the stick of Mike Fillinger. An errant pass from sophomore defenseman Kaare Odegard was intercepted atop the right faceoff circle by Alexander, who found Fillinger streaking through the left circle where he deflected the feed past Greenham to make it 3-2. FSU's Pat Nagle held strong on the opposing end, to help secure the victory and series sweep with 29 saves in the contest. Greenham (12-12-4) had 20 saves in the loss and the Nanooks outshot FSU 31-23, while neither team cashed in on a single man-advantage opportunity in four chances.
The Blue and Gold hit the road early Wednseday morning, making their final regular season road trip to Sault Saint Marie, Michigan, where they will face the Lake Superior State Lakers next weekend.
